Day
8 - Dughla - Lobuche (4970m/16,306ft)
April 12, 2000
Having breakfast
Al Fresco on a sunny Dughla morning
This photo was
taken 700ft above our camp at Dughla. The next photo shows what awaited
us at the top of the ridge
Numerous chortens,
which are memorials to those who died on the mountain, dot the landscape
above Dughla. This was a veritable graveyard.
Those of you
who know the players in the 1996 Everest tragedy will recognize the
name Scott Fischer. Next to his memorial lies that of his protege
and good friend Lopsang Jangbu Sherpa.
On the road from
Dughla to Lobuche. The large mountain on the left is Pumori,
23,600ft / 7200m. This trek was fairly easy after the initial steep
ascent above Dughla.
These collection
of lodges comprise Lobuche, 16,200ft / 4940m
Those of you
who read Into Thin Air will recall how John Krakauer
described this place as filthy, covered in dung. We bought a tube
of Pringles here for $4.5 U.S.$
Another view
of Lobuche
Our camp(center)
in Pyramid, 20 minutes past Lobuche. To the right of our camp
is an Italian research center.
