October 29, 2006: Day 1 - San José - The capital of Costa Rica located in the central highland area with upwards of 1 million people in the greater metropolitan area

View from the window of my room in the hotel La Amistad

Neighbourhood of hotel La Amistad. Too bad I arrived with a 39.6C fever and didn't have the strength to walk around the city as wanted to. Lucky for me a pharmacy and English speaking doctor was around the corner from the hotel.

Waiting for our bus to Guapiles at the bus station in San José, Sunday morning October 29, 2006

We were picked up at the bus station in Guapiles and driven about 20 minutes uphill to begin our hike to the La Danta Salvaje private reserve. However the dirt roads and grade conspired against us. We all got some unexpected excercise that morning pushing one of our cars.

Done with the pushing!

Brief rest at the base camp for La Danta Salvaje before we started a 3+ hour hike to the lodge deep in the rainforest

Skipping across rocks and streams along the way

Not so itsy bitsy spider along the way

Arrival at La Danta Salvaje, perched on a canyon with a stunning view.

The lodges were quite comfortable
