More Perito Moreno

Perito Moreno stats: 30km long. 195km2 surface area. 4km wide. 30-60m tall

Perito Moreno is one of the few advancing glaciers in the world. Sometimes many times an hour you will hear the thunderous crack of an ice wall collapsing into the water. The sound is almost as spetacular as the visual spectacle.

On this day a huge slice of the wall, probably 60m high, broke off and fell forward smashing into the water in a spectacular display. People shouted and grabbed their cameras. Of course at this precise moment my 128MB memory card in my camera was full and I could not photograph or record as video this incredible sight so I'll just have to keep memories of it. And when I asked how this particular collapsed compared to others, our guide Daniel told me that it was the biggest collapse he's seen in his 10 visits here....gee thanks for making me feel better Daniel.

Look at the people at the bottom and it gives you a frame of reference for the size of the ice wall

We took a short cruise around the lake to get closer to the glacier. It was interesting watching the boat push the small iceberg out of the way so it could dock

Aftermath of an ice collapse

Shea and I thought about returning the next day to do the hike inside the glacier. It was something I saw on the Lonely Planet program on TV. You get fitted with crampons and an ice axe and they take you out for 2hrs into natural caverns in the ice where the light refraction makes everything appear blue. We didn't end up going the next day as we chose to join the others on a somewhat uncomfortably long cruise.

Perito Moreno really made an impression on me so I'll be back again someday.
