Around the Chalten area I spotted many locations that could have been used in the Lord of the Rings movies. I was told that New Zealand shares similar vegetation as South America as it was attached to South America 250 million years ago when all the continents were part of the Pangea super continent. But I just did some research and during the Pangea and subsequent Gondwanaland super continent eras, New Zealand was separated from South America by Antarctica. So perhaps that theory doesn't explain why I see similar Lord of the Rings set locations here but my perception was shaped more by what I wanted to see at the time.

We walked by but didn't stop in the Elven realm of Rivendel

Our hikes took us across the dead marshes ...no sign of Gollum or the Nazgul fortunately! pri

We ventured into the forests of Ithilien which didn't border realm of Mordor here

At the edge of the plains of Rohan stands Fangorn Forest

Signs of Orc devastation on the forest

Cerro Solo - the Lonely Mountain, where the greedy dragon Smaug guarded his treasure until the day came when a group of Dwarves and Bilbo Baggins and the One ring came calling
