Inca Trail Day 3

Leaving our Pacamayo camp in the distance as we begin the ascent over the 2nd pass

Part way up we encounter the Inca ruin called Runcu Raccay. Re-discovered by Hiram Bingham back in 1911 who thought it to be a fortress. 30 yrs later Dr Paul Fejos explored it in more detail and delared it a resting place for travellers

Over the pass and now heading towards the ruins at Sayac Marca

Sayac Marca, rediscovered by Hiram Bingham, is built on a fork in the Inca Trail. Believed to be built after the classical period of Inca construction in the 2nd half of the 15th century. Bingham thought it to be a fortified outpost of Machu Picchu; its purpose eludes conclusion.

A misty morning
