Inca Trail Day 4

© 2002 George Wang

On this day we hike from our camp at Phuyu Pata Marca down right to Machu Picchu.

As we descend the mountains towards Machu Picchu, the ruins of Winya Wayna come into view.

The weather this morning varied from drizzle to continous rain.

Arriving first at the magnificent terraces of Winya Wayna (Huinay Huayna). The name means 'forever young' in Quechua. The architecture here includes an impressive sequence of 15 baths.

It's believed this religious site was associated with the worship of water and it was constructed in the latter part of the 15th century.
