The hour long flight from Cusco to Lima

Not far from my hotel in the touristy Miraflores area of Lima is the attractive shopping mall Larco Mar. A collection of ritzy stores and nice restuarants over looking the sea.

8 million people or 1/3 of the population of Peru live in Lima, making it the 4th largest city in South America.

Paragliders floated by frequently during the afternoon

Views from the top of Huayna Picchu....hey there Michael, come on up

The Pacific coast.

The ocean is too cold to swim in comfortably, usually 16C, year round.

Plaza Bolivar in downtown Lima. This is the place where General Jose de San Martin declared Peru's independence. The statue here is called the Liberator

Plaza de Armas, with its fine examples of Spanish colonial architectur, has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO

In Lima's main square, the Plaza de Armas, stands the controversial statue of Francisco Pizzaro, the Spanish Conquistador who destroyed the Inca empire through a combination of strategy, guile and incredible good timing and luck. Spanish patriots would probably like to see this statue displayed prominently in the center of the plaza but it's tucked off to a corner, possibly as a compromise who see him as an instigator of genocide.
